At TungstenNation, every ring is built around one core material — tungsten carbide — but "tungsten carbide" isn't a single, uniform thing. The grade, the binder metal, and any inlay materials all affect how a ring looks, feels, and holds up over years of wear. This page breaks down exactly what goes into our rings, so you know precisely what you're buying.
Tungsten Carbide: The Base Material
Pure tungsten metal is too brittle on its own to be shaped into a ring. What we and most reputable tungsten jewelry makers actually use is tungsten carbide — tungsten combined with carbon, then bonded with a metal binder to make it workable. This is the material responsible for the properties tungsten rings are known for:
- Exceptional hardness — close to 9 on the Mohs scale, near sapphire, and far above gold, silver, or titanium
- Scratch resistance that keeps the finish looking new far longer than softer metals
- A dense, substantial weight that many people prefer over lighter ring materials
The carbide itself is what makes tungsten rings durable. The binder metal is what determines a few other important things — including whether a ring is a good fit for people with metal sensitivities.
Binder Metal: Nickel vs. Cobalt
Because pure tungsten carbide can't be pressed into shape without a binding agent, manufacturers use either nickel or cobalt to bond it:
Nickel-bonded tungsten carbide is the more common and typically less expensive option. It produces a strong, reliable ring, but nickel is also one of the most common metal allergens — so this isn't the right choice for anyone with a known nickel sensitivity.
Cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide is the more allergy-conscious alternative. It offers comparable hardness and durability to nickel-bonded carbide, without the nickel exposure. We specify which binder metal is used on every product page, so this isn't something you have to guess at or ask about separately if it matters to you.
Neither option is "better" in an absolute sense — the right choice depends on your own sensitivity, and we'd rather you know the difference than find out after wearing a ring for a few weeks.
Carbide Grade and Why It Matters
Not all tungsten carbide is manufactured to the same standard. Grade affects:
- Polish consistency — higher-grade carbide takes and holds a finer polish
- Chip resistance at the edges, particularly on rings with beveled or faceted designs
- Long-term color stability, especially on darker or multi-tone finishes
Lower-grade carbide, often used to cut costs, can look similar in a product photo but perform noticeably differently after months of daily wear. We use a consistent, higher-grade carbide across our collection rather than mixing grades to hit different price points.
Inlay Materials
Many of our designs incorporate inlay materials set into the tungsten carbide band. Where a ring includes an inlay, we describe it specifically and accurately:
- Wood inlays — genuine wood (such as koa or rosewood, depending on the design), sealed to resist moisture, not a printed wood-grain pattern
- Meteorite inlays — authentic meteorite material with its natural Widmanstätten pattern, not a laser-etched imitation
- Carbon fiber inlays — real woven carbon fiber, prized for its lightweight strength and distinctive texture
- Precious metal inlays — genuine gold or silver banding, which also carries some intrinsic material value, unlike the tungsten carbide base itself
If a listing says "wood inlay," it's real wood. If it says "meteorite," it's genuine meteorite. We think that shouldn't need saying, but in this market, it does — so we say it.

Tungsten carbide's trade-off is straightforward: exceptional daily-wear durability and a substantial feel, in exchange for the inability to resize after manufacturing. For many people — particularly those who work with their hands or simply want a ring that looks the same in ten years as it does today — that trade-off is an easy one.
