Because tungsten carbide rings can't be resized after manufacturing, getting your size right before you order matters more than it would with a softer metal ring. This guide walks you through a few reliable ways to measure at home, along with tips to help you get an accurate result the first time.
Why Accurate Sizing Matters More With Tungsten
As covered in our Ring Materials guide, tungsten carbide reaches its final hardness during manufacturing and can't be reshaped afterward the way gold or silver rings can. That means the size you order is the size you'll have — so it's worth taking a few extra minutes to measure carefully rather than guessing. Method 1: Measure an Existing Ring
The most reliable method, if you have a ring that already fits the intended finger well, is to measure that ring directly.
- Find a ring that fits the correct finger comfortably — not too tight, not sliding off.
- Measure the inside diameter of the ring in millimeters, using a ruler or a printable ring sizer.
- Compare that measurement to the sizing chart below to find your size.
This method tends to be more accurate than measuring your finger directly, since it removes variables like finger swelling or how tightly you pull a string.
Method 2: The String or Paper Strip Method
If you don't have a ring to measure, you can measure your finger directly:
- Wrap a thin strip of string, paper, or a fabric measuring tape snugly around the base of the intended finger.
- Mark the point where the string or paper overlaps itself.
- Measure that length in millimeters — this is your finger's circumference.
- Compare the measurement to the sizing chart below.
This method is convenient but slightly less precise than measuring an existing ring, since how snugly you wrap the string can affect the result. If your measurement falls between two sizes on the chart, we generally recommend sizing up, particularly for wider band styles.

Tips for the Most Accurate Measurement
- Measure at the end of the day. Fingers are naturally slightly larger later in the day and in warmer temperatures, and slightly smaller in the morning or cold weather. Measuring in the evening tends to give a more representative result.
- Measure a few times. Take the measurement two or three times and use the most consistent result, rather than relying on a single measurement.
- Account for band width. Wider bands (8mm or more) generally fit more snugly than narrower bands at the same numeric size, since more surface area contacts the finger. If you're ordering a wide band and are between two sizes, sizing up is usually the safer choice.
- Consider your knuckle. If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, size for comfortable passage over the knuckle rather than for the snuggest possible fit at the base — a ring that's difficult to get on and off isn't comfortable for daily wear.
- Avoid measuring when your hands are cold. Cold hands cause fingers to temporarily shrink slightly, which can lead to ordering a size that's too small.
Buying as a Gift
If you're ordering as a surprise and can't ask directly, a few practical approaches:
- Borrow a ring the person already wears on the intended finger (even briefly) and measure it using Method 1 above
- Compare against a ring of your own, accounting for any noticeable difference in finger size between you and the recipient
- Ask a friend or family member of the recipient who might already know or be able to find out discreetly
